Data reconstruction after targeted data reduction in difficult communication environments with a focus on image and sound (DDK)

  1. Status: Planned Program

Background

In environments with a communication infrastructure that is difficult to establish (existing or ad-hoc), low data transmission throughput rates are a common problem. This leads to communication difficulties and even complete transmission interruptions. Depending on the scenario, the resulting consequences can not only be economic, but can also affect the health and lives of those involved.

Aim

The research program “Data reconstruction after targeted data reduction in difficult communication environments with a focus on image and sound” (DDK) pursues the aim of investigating/testing technologies and approaches that are suitable for ensuring the secure transmission of video/image and sound even with minimal bandwidth. The aim is to improve the communication capabilities of internal and external security actors in the field by specifically reducing the data before transmission and then upscaling or restoring it afterwards. However, the quality of mission-critical content in particular may only be reduced to such an extent that the content is not distorted.

Disruptive Risk Research

The disruptive potential of the research results primarily from the transmission of images and sound in scenarios in which this is not feasible with current technology. The communication and transmission of critical information that this makes possible is an essential capability in the event of an emergency or disaster. There is also enormous potential in the civilian sector by saving bandwidth, e.g. for video calls or streaming. This could free up high capacities of the Internet infrastructure, which in turn would reduce costs, conserve limited resources and enable better communication even in areas with poor coverage.
